Use & at Open Archives

If you use Open Archives to search for your ancestors, try searching for two names by using the &-operator. It allows you to search for two different people who appear in the same record.

Examples:

  • Woordes & Mennink: two last names of one of my ancestral couples. This gives me their marriage record, birth, marriage, and death records of their children, and the population registers of houses where they lived together. This is my favorite type of query.
  • Woordes & Hanna Catharina: the last name of one ancestor, with the first name of the wife. This is useful when you do not know the last name but do know the first name.
  • Johanna Woordes & Hanna Catharina Mennink: the name of a child and her mother, if I want to find records about a specific person.

Please note that the more you fill in, the less you find, since each term acts as a filter.
